Millsaps-M.C. game benefits no-kill shelter

For the third year in a row, the annual D-III Backyard Brawl on Sept. 5 in Jackson between Millsaps and Mississippi College will benefit the Community Animal Rescue & Adoption Center, the state's largest no-kill animal shelter.

California high schooler jumps early

A high school basketball player from San Diego has left school a year early and signed with an Israeli Premier league team. We wish we could have left high school early because we thought it was "boring," and then pick up a $150,000 check for our trouble. After all, in 1973, that was real money. Now, it's just a few nights on the town with Rick Pitino.

Myrtle's Price in WNBA trade

Armintie Price, the former Myrtle and Ole Miss standout, has been traded from the Chicago Sky to the Atlanta Dream -- where the coaching staff includes former Rebels head coach Carol Ross. Here's a story from the Atlanta paper.

Here's a press release from the Dream.

Price, a two-time Journal high school player of the year (2002-03) was the WNBA's 2007 Rookie of the Year but her playing time had decreased since then. She was only averaging 3.5 points a game this season in Chicago.

Brewers will cut ties with Nettleton's Bill Hall

The Milwaukee Brewers will eat about $11 million to cut ties with slumping Bill Hall, the former Nettleton standout. He's been designated for assignment, giving the team 10 days to trade him or cut him.

It's a big baseball story developing this afternoon, part of a general shakeup in Milwaukee and the top story for the newspaper there. Here's the MLB.com take on the news.

We ran a version of this analysis, first posted on Aug. 1, that seemed harsh in terms of its outlook about Hall's future with the Brewers. Instead, it turned out to be correct.
