Final update:

Brittney Reese uncorked the best long jump in the world this year to win the finals on Sunday. ESPN's story here. It will be her second Olympics - and she's the first athlete with Ole Miss ties to do that.

And Ole Miss junior Isiah Young reached his first Olympics, winning the men's 200 meters. Ole Miss has an update on both here.

Sunday morning update:

Isiah Young moved into the finals of the men's 200 by finishing second in Saturday's semifinal heats in 20.45. In this field, he has a decent chance of getting to London today.

The 200 will be the final event of the day, at about 6:50 p.m. CT.

Former Rebels NCAA champ Anwton Hicks just missed on a ticket to London, finishing fourth in the men's 110 hurdles.

The long jump, with Brittney Reese in the field, gets started about 5 p.m. CT.

Saturday morning update:

Friday was a good day in Eugene, Ore., for athletes with Ole Miss ties.

Former All-American Brittney Reese needed only one attempt to qualify for the women's long jump final on Sunday. As a four-time world champ, she's the favorite.

Junior Isiah Young turned in a 20.38 in the men's 200-meter prelims and moves through to the semifinals on Saturday. He had the best time of any current collegian in the race.

Former NCA champ Antwon Hicks movd through to the semfinals of the men's 110-meter hurdles with the third-best time in the preliminary heats. The semis are on Saturday.

Sunday morning update:

Three Ole Miss athletes failed to advance out of the first round in their events on Saturday. Sprinters Michael Granger (10.61) and Isiah Young (10.409) did not get out of their qualifying heats in the 100 meters, while Ricky Robertson Jr. finished 15th in the high jump qualifying, in which the top 12 advance.

It was a close thing for Young, however. The top 21 advanced to the semifinals and Young's time was just .006 of a second short of advancing.

Young will run in the 200-meter prelims on Friday.

Trell Kimmons, from Coldwater, advanced with a 10.11. He has a personal best of 9.95 and finished second in the 100 at the 2010 U.S. outdoor championships.

Robertson, from Hernando, failed three times at 7-1 3/4 after clearing 7-0 1/2 on his second try. Three jumpers advanced at 7-0 1/2, but all three of those nailed the height on their first try.

Robertson had a best effort of 7-7 1/4 this year - tied for the best jump in the country in 2012.

Former Ole Miss javelin specialist Colin Moleton finished 23rd in his prelims.

Saturday morning update:

MSU's Tavaris Tate, from Starkville, stumbled and fell in Friday's first round of the men's 400 meters. It was a rainy day in Eugene, Ore., and that may have been a factor.

According to reports, Tate pulled up and fell about 150 meters from the finish. The favorite in the event, 2008 Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt, had to avoid Tate on the track. "It's slippery out there," Merritt told reporters. "I think he kind of took it out too hard."

Tate had to be carted from the course, but waved to the Hayward Field crowd as he left the stadium.

Original blog post from Friday:

The U.S. Olympic trials for track and field got under way in earnest on Friday, but former Ole Miss standout Brittney Reese won’t compete until next week.

The 2008 Olympian from Gulfport, widely regarded as a favorite to win her event, will tackle qualifying on July 29 and the finals on the last day of competition, July 1.

She has the best jump in the world this year, an American-record 7.23 meters.

Ole Miss junior high jumper Ricky Robertson is in the men’s field with the second-best qualifying mark (2.32 meters). Qualifying begins on Saturday.

Robertson will be joined by in Eugene four other current Rebels: senior Carson Blanks (400 hurdles), junior Mike Granger (100) and Isiah Young (100 and 200) and freshman Sam Kendricks (pole vault).

Mississippi State’s Tavaris Tate, from Starkville, will also be in the men’s 400-meter field.
