Tom Patterson, a former sports editor of the Clarion Ledger and Denver Post, died Wednesday in California. He was 62.

Patterson made a tremendous impact in Jackson -- and that would be so if all he'd done there was hire Rick Cleveland, as he did in 1979.

But he's also the person who, in 1978, coined the term "Egg Bowl" to describe the annual football game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Cleveland, now with the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, recalls that in his appreciation here.

A more detailed appreciation of his work in Denver appears here.

RIP
