24 area teams still alive

By NEMS Daily Journal

There are 24 basketball teams from the Daily Journal’s circulation area still in the hunt for an MHSAA state championship.
A total of 21 area teams – 11 girls and 10 boys – advanced with wins on Thursday.
They’ll be joined in tonight’s semifinals tonight by three teams from larger schools: Oxford, the host team for the North 5A girls tournament, and the 6A Tupelo boys and 5A Starkville boys.
Oxford (29-0) faces Canton at 7 p.m., after undefeated Lanier (27-0) takes on Center Hill at 6.
Wins tonight would send the two undefeated teams against each other in Saturday’s North championship game.
In each of the three smallest classifications, three of the four remaining girls teams are from the area, led by North hosts Belmont (3A), New Site (2A) and Myrtle (1A). With wins tonight, all three would reach the state tournament.
On the boys side, three of the four remaining teams in 3A and 2A are alive, including host teams Booneville (3A) and Hickory Flat (2A). Class 4A host Shannon and Class 1A host Biggersville can reach Jackson with wins tonight.
• In Class 2A South girls play, East Webster lost 43-41 to Bay Springs on Thursday.
