HATLEY – Hatley won the girls championship at home and Aberdeen ran away with the boys title Saturday night in the 2012 Monroe County Tournament.
Hatley beat Amory 79-31 and Aberdeen beat Hatley 81-17.
Aberdeen’s Bulldogs scored the game’s first 34 points to take a shutout into the second quarter.
“I liked the way we played as a team. We moved the ball. We shared the ball,” Aberdeen coach Roy Hazzle said. “The most important thing, they had some fun up and down the court.”
Hatley got on the board with Deion Hampton’s bucket 9 minutes, 7 seconds into the game after Shedrick Fair connected on a 3-pointer for a 34-0 lead.
Jakeese Walker scored 12 points for the Bulldogs, two on a slam in the opening quarter for a 21-0 lead. The Bulldogs led 50-11 at the half. Fair scored a game-high 13. Austin Howell’s six points were tops for Hatley.
Aberdeen improved to 13-3 with its fifth straight win. Hatley fell to 2-13.
The Bulldogs go to Starkville Tuesday before opening division play at home against Water Valley a week later. Games at Mooreville and against Baldwyn help to close a tough January slate.
“I like the effort we’re giving. I’d like to get better executing in the halfcourt game,” Hazzle said, “cut down the turnovers and intensify the defense.”
(G) Hatley 79 Amory 31: Hatley’s five senior Lady Tigers won their first Monroe County Tournament championship with a 79-31 win against Amory to give their coach an early birthday present.
Lachelle Vance’s bucket made it 20-4 in the opening quarter and a pair of free throws from Jamelle Vance gave Hatley (10-6) its biggest first-half lead at 43-10. Katie Beth Worthy’s lay-in at the buzzer made it 51-19.
“They were more focused tonight than I’ve had them in a long time,” said Hatley coach Terry Walters, who shares a birthday with Elvis tomorrow. “I’ve been telling them for years they can play like that. They’re finally believing in it.”
Worthy had a game-high 14 points. Lauren Sloan added 13 and Lachelle Vance 12. Amory (2-14) got 12 points from Kerina Harris.
