Mississippi State’s return to respectability starts today, it hopes.
The Bulldogs have finished last in the SEC in each of the last three seasons, and they posted a program-worst 6-24 league record in 2010. Coach John Cohen, entering his third season, believes he has enough parts in place for this year to be one of improvement, although the SEC coaches have picked his team to finish last again.
MSU, 23-33 overall last year, get 2011 going at 4 p.m. today against Akron. State will then play two games Saturday, against Akron and Lamar, and then play Lamar again on Sunday.
Devin Jones, a junior from Eupora, will start on the mound today for MSU.
Akron, of the MAC, went 21-34 last season but returns its entire pitching staff. Lamar, of the Southland Conference, is coming off a 35-26 season in which it won the league title and reached the NCAA Regionals.
