After a strong showing in state competition, a pair of area gymnasts will enter this weekend with a chance to shine on an even brighter stage.
Tupelo’s Morgan Brekke and Shannon native Dashai Kennedy both received top honors at last month’s state championships, earning a chance to represent Mississippi this weekend at the Region 8 Gymnastics Championships in Atlanta.
Both athletes train at Tupelo’s Elite Gymnastics.
” We are very proud of both girls,” said Elite coach Metry McGaughy. “They are both very hard workers who deserve every honor they receive.”
Kennedy, 13, won the state championship on the vault and finished second in Mississippi’s all-around competition.
“Dashai has competed at this level for over a year and she has come a long way,” McGaughy said.
For her part, 11-year-old Brekke has progressed several levels in a short amount of time, a testament to her work ethic.
“She was at Level 4 last year and she worked so hard this year,” McGaughy said. “I put her at Level 7 at the state meet to get her ready for next year and she went out and performed well enough to go to Atlanta.”
The Region 8 meet features the top gymnasts from competition levels 7 and 8 from across the southeast.
The event starts Friday.
