AREA ROUNDUP: Hood scores four times as Smithville wins shootout

Smithville running back Tyler Hood scored four touchdowns Friday night in the Seminoles’ 55-52 Division 1-1A road victory against Coldwater.

Hood’s final touchdown, which came on a 1-yard run with 6 minutes, 38 seconds remaining, proved to be the game-winner.

His other scoring runs covered 1, 4 and 20 yards.

Smithville (5-1), ranked No. 2 in the Journal’s small school rankings, saw quarterback Drew Lane throw touchdown passes of 4 yards to Neil Knight and 12 yards to Hunter Bennett. Lann also scored on a 2-yard run.

Dee Moore’s 29-yard run capped the Seminoles’ scoring.

BALDWYN 53, TISHOMINGO CO. 18: The Bearcats (3-3) captured a road win behind the passing of Corbin Scott and the running of Duke Upshaw.

Scott threw touchdown passes of 55 and 56 yards to Martel Brown while Upshaw scored on runs of 35 and 40 yards for Baldwyn. Upshaw finished with 229 all-purpose yards.

Nate Watson (23 yards), Hudson Beene (18 yards), Tyran Shinault (14 yards) and Devonte Gates (3 yards) scored TDs for the Bearcats.

BOONEVILLE 28, HARDING ACA. 14: The Blue Devils (4-1), on the strength of three touchdowns from Zeus Rogers, traveled to Memphis to capture a non-division victory.

Rogers scored his first touchdown on a 46-yard run in the second quarter to give Booneville a 14-0 lead. He caught a 63-yard TD pass from Jack Simpson later in the half to make it 21-7.

Rogers added a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter to give the Blue Devils a 28-7 lead.

Elijah Tate scored Booneville’s first points on a 3-yard run in the opening quarter.

ALCORN CENTRAL 21, NEW SITE 20: The Golden Bears scored 20 first-half points and held on to win.

Ethan Carmichael scored on a 1-yard run and later caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Josh Berry for Alcorn Central (2-4).

Jason Gurley added an 80-yard touchdown run and kicked all three extra points for the Bears.

Koie Jackson scored on runs of 2 and 37 yards for New Site (2-3) and threw a 96-yard scoring pass to Joey Champion.

STARKVILLE 35, COLUMBUS 13: The Yellow Jackets (3-2), the Journal’s No. 3-ranked large school, won a non-division 6A game against Columbus on the strength of quarterback Princeton Jones.

He rushed for one and passed for two touchdowns.

MARSHALL ACADEMY 48, FAYETTE 0: Devin McGregor rushed for three TDs and caught one scoring pass from Dakota Dailey to lead the Patriots (5-1). Daily three three touchdown passes for Marshall.

WATER VALLEY 42, WINONA 10: Water Valley (6-0), the state’s No. 3-ranked 3A team, was paced by Brandon Bounds, who rushed for 139 yards and scored a touchdown.

THRASHER 39, VARDAMAN 28: J.T. Huddleston scored two touchdowns to lead the Rebels (3-2).

MUS 35, LAFAYETTE 7: Memphis University School (4-2) scored 35 unanswered points to defeat the Commodores on their home turf. Devon Thomas gave Lafayette (3-3) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 1-yard run.

EUPORA 23, HOUSTON 12: Running back Damien Fields scored two touchdowns on runs of 1 and 12 yards for Houston (0-6) in its loss to Eupora.

COFFEEVILLE 64, BIGGERSVILLE 6: Darian Barnett scored the lone points for the Lions (1-5)


Tupelo’s home opponent next week, Grenada, defeated DeSoto Central 51-14 in a Division 1-6A game.

Jackson Prep, coached by former Tupelo coach Ricky Black, defeated Bassfield 27-20 in overtime. Bassfield came into the game ranked in the state’s top 10.

South Panola bounced back from a loss last week to defeat Horn Lake 42-13 in Division 1-6A play.
