Area roundup: Lemus nails first field goal in Green Wave’s win

Omar Lemus kicked a 17-yard field goal in the fourth quarter Friday to lift West Point to a 24-21 comeback victory against Lake Cormorant in a Division 1-5A game.

The field goal attempt was the first of the season for Lemus.

Running back Aeris Williams rushed for 293 yards on 35 carries and scored two second-half touchdowns to lead the Green Wave (4-2, 2-1), who trailed 21-0 at halftime.

Williams scored on a 53-yard scamper to cut Lake Cormorant’s lead to 21-7. Davion Bradshaw added a 15-yard pass interception return for a score.

Williams added a 20-yard TD run in the third quarter to tie the score at 21-all.

Lake Cormorant (5-3, 2-2) quarterback Bailey Walker threw two TD passes in the first half.

BALDWYN 48, EAST UNION 7: Corbin Scott completed 10 of 16 passes for 189 yards and three TDs to lead the Journal’s top-ranked 1A/2A team to a 1-2A win.

Scott’s scoring passes covered 41 yards to Martel Brown, 21 yards to Tyran Shinault and 13 yards to Marbreio Crump. Brown also added a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD for the Bearcats (6-3, 3-0).

Blake Spruill scored on a 6-yard run for East Union (5-2, 1-2).

WALNUT 29, NEW SITE 8: Armani Linton scored three touchdowns, including one on a 53-yard run to lead the Journal’s No. 2-ranked 1A/2A team to victory.

The Wildcats (8-1, 3-0) also got a 4-yard TD run from Shawn Thornton.

New Site dented the scoreboard on a 42-yard fumble recovery and return by Timmie Hamby.

OXFORD 39, NEW HOPE 14: The Chargers, the Journal’s No. 1-ranked 5A/6A team, remained unbeaten with a Division 1-5A win.

Oxford (8-0, 4-0) took a 7-0 lead on Mike McGhee’s 60-yard punt return. Kenzie Phillips added a 4-yard run to give the Chargers a 16-0 halftime lead.

HAMILTON 55, BIGGERSVILLE 0: Keyshon Heard scored four TDs, one on a 58-yard run to lead the Lions (6-2, 4-1) to a Division 1-1A win.

Quinshay Heard added a 47-yard TD run and caught a 27-yard TD pass.

LAFAYETTE 44, NEW ALBANY 7: D.K. Buford scored on a 73-yard run in the first quarter to kickstart the Commodores in their Division 2-4A win.

Buford finished with four TDs, including one on a 25-yard fumble return for Lafayette (4-5, 1-2). Eddie Berry scored on a 3-yard run for New Albany (4-5, 1-2).

MARSHALL ACADEMY 68, LEE 0: The Patriots scored on an 8-yard pass from Dakota Dailey to Colt Lindsey for the first of 10 touchdowns. Dailey threw for three TDs and rushed for one.

KOSSUTH 54, ALCORN CENTRAL 7: Quarterback Weston Bobo threw a 46-yard TD pass to Matthew Stewart and a 43-yard scoring strike to Blake Cain to lead the Aggies to a Division 1-3A win.

BRUCE 7, EAST WEBSTER 3: Donta Armstrong scored on a 59-yard run with 6:13 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Trojans to a Division 4-2A win.

SALTILLO 43, CENTER HILL 28: Running back Diamante Pounds scored four TDs to lead the Tigers (6-3, 2-2) to a Division 1-5A victory.
