OXFORD – No. 18 Ole Miss turned in a solid pitching and defensive performance on Tuesday, sweeping a pair of games from Central Arkansas, 2-1 and 4-0.
“We played well today in both games,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “We were very clean and had great defense all day long. We put some at-bats together and were able to throw a lot of our guys.”
In the sweep, Central Arkansas (13-17) was out-hit 16-8 and stranded nine.
Sam Smith (2-2) gave up two hits and an unearned run in the first game and Brett Huber worked the seventh inning for his seventh save of the season. Matt Snyder drove in the first run in the first inning and the second scored on an Austin Anderson sac bunt in the fifth.
In Game 2, Josh Laxer (3-0) pitched two innings for the win. Snyder drove in two runs and also scored on a wild pitch.
In the doubleheader, Mathis went 4 for 6 with three runs.
Ole Miss (23-10) opens its weekend SEC series at Georgia on Thursday night.
