The undefeated Oxford girls, playing at home, opened a 16-point lead on West Point in the first quarter of Friday’s Division 2-5A championship game.
That lead was 13 at halftime, and Chargers coach Shayne Linzy was uneasy with what he’d seen.
“I’ll be honest, I thought we let off the pedal in the second quarter,” Linzy said after his team’s 85-53 victory.
“We didn’t make any real adjustments at halftime, we just told the girls, ‘Hey they think they can win this now.’ We picked up the pace in the second half and finished them off.”
His Chargers improved to 28-0 as they outscored West Point 45-26 in the second half. Alexis Malone scored 22 points and Erica Sisk added 18 to lead four Oxford players in double figures..
Wilma Davis scored a game-high 24 points for West Point.
The victory puts Oxford in a North tournament game on Monday night at home against Callaway.
“We have a history with them,” Linzy said with a laugh. “They’re the team that put us out of the North tournament last year. Callaway beat us last year and will come in thinking they can do it again.”
The West Point girls will travel to Lanier.
In the boys championship game, West Point beat Oxford 69-64.
