SALTILLO – Jake Crosson, 14, of Columbus shot a two-day total of 151 at Big Oaks Golf Club to win the boys 14-15 division in the North Mississippi Coca-Cola Junior Golf Tour championship.
After posting a head-turning score of 72 in the first round, Crosson recorded a second-day 79 on Tuesday to hold his lead.
“Playing with the lead really affected me positively, because I knew I had a big lead to play with and some room for error,” Crosson said. “I didn’t have to worry if I had a bad hole or about winning the tournament going down the green.”
The event wrapped up the summer golf season.
“The Coke Tour has had a phenomenal year with great participation, and the record turnout we’ve had is just an example of that,” said Tour director Greg Flannagan.
The championship field was made up of the players who finished in the top eight in the point standings for their age division.
Russ Lewis finished second in the 14-15 division with a 160 and Blake Weeden third with a score of 164.
Brandon Walker, 16, of Vardaman, held onto his lead as well. Walker’s back-to-back rounds of 74 gave him a two-day 148 and the 16-18 division title.
Walker credited his short game with his success.
“I had the right speed. Once I had the speed, I got the line and I was able to make it,” he said of his putting.
Brookes Hudson held on to his five-stroke lead and clinched the boys 12-13 division with a second-round 79 and an overall score of 152. Kye Meeks finished second in the division with a 157 while Austin Lauderdale was third with a 158.
Other winners were Emerson Blair in the Powerade division (ages 6-9) with a 48-44–92, Hannah Grace Nall in the girls 10-12 division with a 46-41–87, Drew Wilson in the boys 10-11 division with an 38-43–81, and Sara Johnson in the girls 13-18 division with a 77-80–157.
