POTTS CAMP – After coming away with a victory at Strayhorn last week, the Potts Camp Cardinals were looking to win their second in a row Friday night.
They were able to do just that, turning back a Mantachie team that had won two straight after an 0-2 start.
Big plays were the theme of the game as Potts Camp scored five touchdowns of 50 yards or more as they took an early lead and never looked back, cruising to a 46-14 victory.
Starting quarterback Jordon Harris rushed for two touchdowns and caught another as he led the Cardinals with 149 rushing yards on 10 carries.
“I just want to thank the (offensive) line,” said Harris. “They are the reason why everything was possible. We couldn’t do anything without them.”
Potts Camp (3-1) took an early first quarter lead when Harris broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run on the first play of the Cardinals’ second drive.
Brantley Harris caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Jarvis Jones later in the first, and Jamarquis Foster ran in from 11 yards out in the second as Potts Camp took a 20-0 lead.
Mantachie (2-3) got on the board with 2:10 left in the half on a 1-yard Dustin Carrell quarterback keeper.
Foster got loose again early in the third quarter, this time on a 71-yard scamper that seemed to deflate the Mustang sideline. Jordon Harris caught a 64-yard pass from Ben Bolden later in the quarter to give the Cardinals a 34-7 advantage.
Already with the game out of reach, Potts Camp tacked on two additional scores in the fourth, a 45-yard Harris run and 90-yard Jones interception return.
Mantachie scored the final points of the game with 4:02 left in the contest when Dustin Carrell hooked up with Nick Burns from 29 yards out.
“I thought we had one of our best weeks of practice,” said Potts Camp coach Shane Stone. “Our guys were really focused. We saw on film some things we thought we could catch them on and we were lucky enough to execute and catch them.”
