Big weekend for sports in Tupelo

A huge sports weekend for Tupelo got under way Thursday morning as competition began in the MACJC state tennis tournament at Rob Leake City Park. That event runs through Saturday, with 10 men’s and women’s teams in competition.
Today at 9 a.m., competition begins in the Region 8 gymnastics meet for Level 7/8 competitors. Three athletes from Tupelo’s Elite Gymnastics – Morgan Brekke, 12, Alyssa McClain, 10, and Chamberlyn Grubbs, 9 – are on the eight-member Mississippi Level 7 team. The team will compete in a session that begins at 6:30 p.m.
The gymnastics competition continues through Sunday.
Also starting today is the three-day 24/7Softball.com tournament for adult men’ s and women’s teams at the Eastwood and Veterans complexes.
On Saturday, 59 youth soccer teams from around the state will be in action in the state northern district tournament. The two-day event begins at 8 a.m.
It’s estimated that upwards of 3,000 athletes, coaches and supporters are in town for these events.
