Blue Mountain College to add intercollegiate golf in 2010

BLUE MOUNTAIN – Blue Mountain College announced Thursday it will add golf programs for men and women to its athletics lineup in fall 2010.

“We are excited about adding two more teams to our growing athletics program,” said Lavon Driskell, BMC athletics director. Being able to add golf is another step that will allow us to compete more fully in the TranSouth Athletic Conference and the NAIA.”

Kirkwood National Golf Club in Holly Springs, perennially among the top five courses in Mississippi, will be the Toppers’ home course, and men’s basketball coach Jerry Conner will also coach the golf team.

“Being able to play at a course like Kirkwood is really something special,” Conner said. “It’s one of the best courses in the Mid-South, and having it as a home course gives the BMC golf program instant credibility.”

Driskell said each BMC team will be allowed to offer five full scholarships – the NAIA limit.

“This is another opportunity for Blue Mountain College to offer student-athletes help achieve their college degrees,” he said, “and it’s a huge opportunity for golfers in the region to advance in their sport and compete in a strong conference.”
