Blue Mountain knocks off No. 1 Cumberland

NEW ALBANY – Blue Mountain College knocked off the NAIA’s top-ranked Cumberland University 7-4 in the second game of a TranSouth Athletic Conference doubleheader here Saturday and the Toppers snapped a five-game losing streak.

Cumberland, the defending NAIA national champions and TSAC champions, won a pitchers’ duel in the first game, 4-1. The Bulldogs’ Will Locante and the Toppers’ Blake Jolly both fired two-hitters. Locante struck out 12 and Jolly struck out six.

In the second game, BMC clinched the win with a three-run sixth inning. Channing Walker and Corey Adams delivered a pair of run-scoring singles, and Walker scored on an error by CU first baseman Greg Appleton.

The Toppers went ahed 4-0 in the third inning when Sam Summerford drove in Ben Wallis with a single, Adams drove in Dustin Lunn and Summerford with a double down the left field line, and a bases-loaded walk drove in Adams.

Walker and Hunter Mize held Cumberland to seven hits while BMC pounded out nine, including a two-run double by Corey Adams.

The Toppers are 9-16 overall and 2-7 in the league. The Bulldogs are 19-9 and 6-3.
