BOONEVILLE – Northeast Mississippi Community College head golf coach Craig Lauderdale continues to fill out his 2010-11 recruiting class with local players.
Booneville’s Easton Cartwright became the latest local athlete to sign on the dotted line joining the Tiger golf team when the Booneville graduate inked with the Tiger golf program on Thursday, July 22.
During his high school career, Cartwright was a four-year participant for the Blue Devils at the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Class 3A State Golf Championships.
Cartwright helped Booneville secure a pair of runner-up finishes in state during his freshman and sophomore years while playing with Northeast golfers Brandon Robbins, Blake Hatfield, Trey Mattox, Alex Downs and Dustin Bridges.
During his final year with the Blue Devils, Cartwright was named a scholar athlete and had the lowest average on the Booneville golf team.
When not on the links, Cartwright was the second-leading scorer on the Booneville High School basketball team tallying almost 300 points during the Blue Devils 19-11 season that included a 10-2 mark at home.
Cartwright was key in securing the Blue Devils’ place in the Class 3A basketball playoffs breaking out for a 20-point game against Kossuth during the Division 1-3A tournament as the Blue Devils upended the Aggies 65-62.
Northeast’s golf team is coming off its most successful season since switching back to Division II competition. The Tigers rallied for runner-up places in both the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Tournament and the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Region XXIII Tournament.
Northeast golfer Blake Hatfield, also from Booneville, captured the MACJC State Individual Championship while Hatfield and Robbins both qualified for the NJCAA National Golf Championships in Goodyear, Ariz., with Hatfield claiming a sixth place finish nationally.
