Christian Trent held the Georgia State (3-3) offense in check until the Rebel bats could heat up as Ole Miss (6-0) defeated the Panthers 9-1 to claim the weekend series on Saturday.
The Rebels will seek the sweep in the series finale today at 1:30 p.m.
Auston Bousfield and Sikes Orvis led the Rebel offense. Bousfield went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with a home run and four RBI, while Orvis went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
Trent (2-0) worked 7 innings, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts. It was the second straight outing Trent did not issue a walk. Josh Laxer closed out the final 2 innings with a walk, three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
“Christian (Trent) was terrific,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “He pitched very similar to how Chris (Ellis) did last night. Just a great mix of three pitches and it really kept them off balance.
“He was super dominant. It was a great performance and another great defensive game. (Josh) Laxer was tremendous. He pitched as well as he ever has here. He was really dominant today.”
Panthers score first
After Georgia State took a 1-0 lead in the second, the first time the Rebels trailed this season, Bousfield opened the fifth inning with a solo home run. Four batters later, Orvis delivered a three-run shot to right center to give the Rebels a 4-1 lead.
The Rebels would bat around in the frame, getting a bases-loaded single from Bousfield later in the inning to cap a five-run inning.
Ole Miss put together a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by Preston Overbey’s RBI triple and Bousfield’s two-run single.
