Brassell not among Rebels at camp

OleMissLogoOXFORD – Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze officially welcomed 105 players – Nick Brassell not among them – when the Rebels reported for the start of camp on Thursday.

Brassell, a former South Panola star, played at Ole Miss under Houston Nutt in 2011 before grades forced him to transfer to East Mississippi Community College for the 2012 season.

He re-signed with Ole Miss in February but did not meet academic requirements to compete this fall. Freeze knew enough about Brassell’s status at SEC Media Days to tell local writers that he really did not expect Brassell to be eligible.

Had he made the grades Brassell would have given the Rebels what Freeze has called an “NFL cornerback.”

The report list included 23 newcomers, most of which have been on campus and working out with the team this summer.

Practice begins Saturday.
