Bubba Davis heading to New Albany

NEW ALBANY – New Albany has found a new football coach, and he's as impressed with the Bulldogs as they are with him.

Bubba Davis, who won four state championships at West Point in the 1980s, was hired Friday by the New Albany School Board to replace the retiring Rickey Bates.

A 1998 inductee into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame, Davis was most recently at Petal, where he went 14-7 the past two seasons.

He inherits a New Albany program that has reached the postseason only once since moving up to Class 4A in 2003. The Bulldogs' high hopes for 2006 were dashed by a slew of injuries that contributed to a 4-6 record.
