STARKVILLE – Formal preparations for Year 3 of the John Cohen era began Thursday for Mississippi State.
For the next six weeks, the Bulldogs will practice and scrimmage as they try to bring the program out of the SEC cellar. The normal routine will call for scrimmages every Friday, Saturday and Sunday to simulate the SEC’s weekend scheduling format, and practices some Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Fifteen letter-winners return to the 44-man squad, and Cohen will get a close-up look at his highly ranked signing class. He’s also eager to see which veterans will step into leadership roles and how the pitching staff progress.
“The whole thing’s got to start and end on the mound,” Cohen said. “If we’re better on the mound, we’re going to be a better club.”
MSU went 23-33 last season and finished last in the SEC Western Division with a 6-24 league mark.
