AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State continued its strong weekend of pitching on Sunday, but the Bulldogs also broke loose at the plate.
MSU erupted for a season-high 19 hits in a 12-1 victory over Auburn to complete the series sweep. The Bulldogs (31-18, 14-10 SEC) won the first two games against the Tigers by 3-0 scores.
Mississippi State trails Ole Miss by a game in the SEC West standings.
“I really felt good about the kids going into the weekend,” MSU coach John Cohen said. “I really love where we are right now. I wish we were playing tomorrow because we are really locked in on the task at hand like we need to be.”
Cohen’s team broke the game open by scoring eight runs in the seventh inning, two on RBI singles by Brett Pirtle.
Four Bulldogs had three hits on Sunday. Third baseman Matthew Britton went 3 for 5 and drove in four.
Sophomore right-hander Preston Brown (4-1) picked up the victory, allowing two hits in five-plus innings.
In the sweep, eight MSUpitchers held the Tigers to 13 total hits.
MSU returns home for a series with Tennessee that begins on Friday.
