Bulldogs win opener, then the fog rolls in

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State finally got in an SEC game, beating 17th-ranked South Carolina 13-6 Saturday afternoon in the opener of a scheduled doubleheader.
The nightcap was suspended in the top of the third inning with MSU leading 4-0 due to fog and rains that were expected to soon arrive in the area. The game will conclude today starting at noon with a seven-inning game to follow.
The Bulldogs (11-4, 1-0) used a seven-run fifth inning to take control in the opener, the SEC debut for John Cohen as the Bulldogs’ head coach.
“We knew it was going to be tough conditions,” said MSU starting pitcher Tyler Whitney. “But that’s OK because we are used to it, having played a lot of intrasquad scrimmages when it is cold and raining. So it wasn’t a problem for us.”
Whitney (2-0) benefited from the Bulldogs’ season-highs in runs and hits (15).
The junior lefty allowed just one earned run on four hits in five innings of work.
MSU jumped to a 4-1 lead only to see the Gamecocks (10-3, 0-1) tie the game 4-4 via Andrew Crisp’s two-out, three-run home run in the fourth.
However, State quickly regained the lead on Jet Butler’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth and then put the game out of reach with the offensive explosion – 13 batters and six hits – in the fifth.
Nettleton native Luke Adkins had a two-run triple, while Ryan Powers added a two-run single in the fifth to highlight State’s big inning.
Forrest Moore finished up for his first save of the season.
