STARKVILLE – What was originally thought to be a broken ankle turned out to be a sprain for Mississippi State receiver Chad Bumphis.
The junior from Tupelo suffered the injury Monday in the MSU weightroom, although a spokesman didn’t say precisely what occurred. Bumphis said on Twitter on Monday night that his ankle was broken and that he was to have surgery Tuesday morning, but X-rays Tuesday were negative.
Bumphis led State in receiving last season but missed the Gator Bowl with a broken collarbone he suffered against Ole Miss. He was fully healthy for spring practice.
The spokesman did not have a time frame for Bumphis’ recovery.
