Johnny Hill believes in the coaching axiom that a team improves the most from its first game to it second game.
That’s why he has his Oxford Chargers scrimmaging DeSoto Central this week.
The two-quarter scrimmage, scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Oxford High, doesn’t count against him in the won-loss column and he gets a sneak preview of his team.
“You want to see where they’re at,” Hill said. “You really don’t know if they’re ready. This gives you an opportunity to get rid of some of those bugs.
“Of course, your biggest nightmare is getting somebody hurt.”
The Oxford-DeSoto Central matchup is one of three scheduled for Friday in Oxford. Charleston plays Senatobia at 4, Shannon and Southaven at 6.
The format calls for a two-quarter varsity scrimmage and a quarter of junior varsity play.
The annual jamboree is usually played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on the Ole Miss campus, but the venue’s artificial surface is undergoing maintenance.
“The whole reason we play there (Ole Miss) is to give these kids, coaches and officials an opportunity to play in a college stadium,” Hill said. “It’s a beautiful facility.”
– Ripley was scheduled to scrimmage Saturday at Ole Miss against Center Hill. That scrimmage will now be at 6 p.m. Friday at Center Hill.
“It’s a little bit of a disappointment for the players because that will be the only time they will have the opportunity to play on an SEC field,” Ripley coach Mac McCurry said. “I’m glad that our upperclassmen got that opportunity last year.”
– North Pontotoc was scheduled to scrimmage Senatobia in the jamboree at Ole Miss, but canceled when the event was moved.
“We decided we weren’t ready to scrimmage yet,” said first-year Vikings coach J.J. Plummer. “We’re going to practice and continue to get ready for our opener next week at Lewisburg.”
– Itawamba AHS, which was supposed to scrimmage Olive Branch at Ole Miss, will instead play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Aberdeen against the Bulldogs.
– Tupelo’s Golden Wave, two weeks from its Aug. 28 opener at New Hope, will host West Point at 6 p.m. Friday in a scrimmage.
