ABERDEEN – Thursday as Aberdeen dressed for a walk-through a day before the AP’s No. 1 Class 3A Bulldogs traveled to No. 4 4A Noxubee, Channing Ward and teammate Ricky McAllister exchanged friendly punches.
Nothing about the hits Ward lays on the field are friendly though and college coaches are lobbying to have him lay those licks on their fields next season.
It was a busy first week of being allowed to talk with college coaches for the 6-foot-4, 255-pound five-star defensive recruit.
Since the Sept. 1 mark a week ago that opened coaches’ availability to contact recruits once per week, Ward said he’s talked with Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama and Tennessee, mostly head coaches.
He was scheduled to talk with Mississippi State and call LSU’s Les Miles following Thursday’s walk-through.
Ward didn’t knock any teams off his top five list of Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss (still to visit Oklahoma and Georgia) but he did reveal one aspect that may very well knock a contender out.
Redshirting isn’t an option he’s looking at.
