Quinn Elliott isn’t sure his classmates will know if Oxford wins its seventh consecutive state championship this week in tennis.

“I don’t think they keep up,” he said. “I do feel if we lost, people would know and be disappointed.”

The Chargers (20-0) play Stone County today for the MHSAA Class 5A state championship at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. Oxford has defeated Stone County in the title match the last two years.

Elliott, who played singles in last week’s North state win against Saltillo, doesn’t know what he’ll play in the title match.

“Coach (Louis) Nash moves us around a lot,” Elliott noted. “He doesn’t want our opponent to be able to predict our lineup. I’ve played doubles the last two years.”

Nash, who calls this team one of his best, has been impressed with his squad’s work in the postseason. The Chargers have beaten Clarksdale, Ridgeland and Saltillo.

The players are motivated and focused, he says.

“We can get them going … they want to play,” Nash said. “You just show up at practice and you might get nudged out.”

Kara Rose, who won the North girls singles event, is the team’s lone senior starter.

The individual portion of the tournament begins Thursday and the finals are Friday.

Seeking fourth

Warner Creekmore hopes her New Albany tennis team heard the alarm in last week’s North 4A championship match against Pontotoc

The Bulldogs defeated Pontotoc 7-0, but went to third-set tiebreakers in three matches.

New Albany, seeking its fourth straight state championship, plays Newton County on Wednesday at Ridgeland Tennis Center.

Tough task

South Pontotoc may have the toughest task today when it plays seven-time defending 3A state champion St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Ridgeland.

In the 1A final at Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson, East Webster plays Clarkdale.
