TUPELO – The 35th annual Charlie Close Adult Classic tennis tournament began Friday evening at Rob Leake Park in Tupelo.
There are 94 players entered in the event, which will decide titles in 12 divisions, including men’s open singles, women’s 3.5 singles and 10 doubles and mixed doubles draws.
An interesting mixed doubles field includes Fulton’s Courtney Collins, an All-Conference USA sophomore at Memphis, playing with Tupelo tennis veteran Henry Dodge. Today at 9:30 a.m., they’re slated to face Collins’ sister,
Lindsey, and former Amory football standout Linzy Patterson in a semifinal match.
The men’s open singles round-robin field includes Corinth pro William LaFerney, who has dominated the event for a decade.
The tourney runs through Sunday.
