Coca-Cola Classic 10k in Corinth: ‘Perfect’ day for a run

By John L. Pitts/NEMS Daily Journal

CORINTH – It was about 42 degrees and a little sunny as the start of Saturday morning’s 32nd annual Coca-Cola Classic 10k in downtown Corinth.
Perfect weather, winners Josh Whitehead and Tiffany Dudley agreed.
“I got up this morning, looked at the weather forecast and couldn’t wait to run,” said Whitehead, 34, from Madison, Ala. He outkicked last year’s winner, Daniel Kirwa, to the finish line to lead a record field of 1,500 registered runners.
Whitehead’s winning time was 30:44, in a race that serves as Mississippi’s official 10k championship. Kirwa was second in 30:48 – about 42 seconds off his winning time on a steaming hot morning in 2012.
Alexander Lowe of Oxford was third (33:03).
“For me, this was perfect running weather,” said Whitehead, who was finishing his third race in six days. He was third in a California marathon last weekend and ran a 5k in his hometown on Wednesday. “Now, I think I’m done for the week.”
Dudley, who also won the race in 2010, finished seventh overall and led all female finishers in 36:34. She ran in a pack for much of the race with runner-up Ashley Evans (37:20) of Jackson, Tenn., and third-place Meggan Franks (37:40) of Starkville.
“It was perfect weather for a race,” said Dudley, 30, who rose to prominence as a distance runner at Mississippi State when she was known as Tiffany McWilliams. “There was a group of us running together and that really helps with pacing.”

Whitehead and Kirwa were locked in a close battle throughout the race.
“My plan was to go out with the leaders and see what happened,” Whitehead said. “I’m a little surprised that I was able to hang on with Daniel because he’s run some fast 10k’s.
“But I do have a really good finishing kick.”
Michael Mills, from Covington, Ga., was the wheelchair winner. He crossed at about the same time as Kirwa.
The race field included about a dozen runners who’d been in the field for this year’s Boston Marathon. They wore commemorative blue ribbons during the race; a moment of silence for the Boston bombing victims was observed before the race began.
Notes: Whitehead, who works at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, said he planned to run in Saturday’s Gum Tree 10k in Tupelo “if my wife will let me.” … Last year’s female winner, Zamzam Sangau of Murfreesboro, Tenn., finished fourth in 38:12. … The previous race registration record, 1,366, was set last year. … There were 1,217 finishers listed in the official results.
