STARKVILLE – Mississippi State is 12th and Ole Miss 23rd in the preseason men’s rankings released Wednesday by the USTFCCA, the national track and field coaches association.
Both teams are headed to major events this weekend – MSU to the Texas Relays and Ole Miss to the Florida Relays.
Florida’s men are ranked No.1 and lead eight SEC teams in the preseason Top 25. Three other SEC teams are ranked ahead of MSU – Auburn (7), LSU (8) and South Carolina (11).
“I’m happy with the ranking, but I know we have a lot more in us,” head coach Al Schmidt said. “It gives a reason to show everybody where we should be.”
The Texas A&M women are No. 1, with LSU No. 3 and Florida No. 4.
In individual rankings, MSU sophomore D’Angelo Cherry was No. 1 in the 100-meter dash and Davina Orieukwu of Ole Miss was No. 3 in the shot put.
