Blog Bag Answers: On Spring Football, Basketball Recruiting

Had a handful of questions this week, and all good ones, so let’s just get right to it.

Q: If we had to play this weekend, who would be the starting linebackers?

A: The first-team guys would be Cam Lawrence and Chris Hughes on the outside, Brandon Wilson in the middle. Second three would probably be Jamie Jones, Deontae Skinner and Matt Wells, with Ferlando Bohanna possibly in the mix. Linebackers coach Geoff Collins wants a rotation of eight.

Let’s not forget about transfer Brandon Maye, but he’s not here yet.

Q: Other than safety Charles Mitchell, who has shown themselves a leader on the defensive side of the ball?

A: Wilson is a leader by example of nothing else, considering Collins called him the hardest worker on the team. I think cornerback Corey Broomfield and tackles Josh Boyd and Fletcher Cox are guys to look to also.

Q: I look for Cox and Boyd to have a big year, have they had a good spring?

A: Far as I can tell, they have. Both are running first team, and I recall yesterday the defensive line getting a good push up the middle. Those guys will be quite the pair this fall.

Q: Does Rick Stansbury think there is a good chance State will sign the ex-Tennessee commit Philip Jurick, or he is recruiting someone else just in case Jurick signs elsewhere?

A: Since Jurrick, a 6-foot-11, 266-pounder, is still an unsigned prospect, Stansbury is forbidden by NCAA rules to publicly comment on him. But considering how much help MSU needs down low, you’d think Jurick would give the Bulldogs strong consideration.

According to BulldogBlitz.com, Jurick is scheduled to visit MSU on Super Bulldog Weekend – that begins a week from today – as is 6-8, 215-pound three-start prospect Braeden Anderson of Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Massachusetts. So he’s a possibility

For those who don’t know, Stansbury has one scholarship to spare for 2011, so he could add a fifth member to this class when the spring signing period begins April 11 (Roquez Johnson was No. 4, but he’s technically a commitment until the signing period).
