Hey, so I’m late with this. Still qualifies as Friday-ish, though, right? Good. Hope it’s going great for you. Got a few good answers, kind of faked the rest. Maybe nobody will notice.
Q: Maybe a little recruiting update? Let’s talk out these guys from Mississippi.
A: MSU is up to eight football commitments for the 2012 class, the latest being defensive end Ryan Brown of Archbishop Shaw High School in Marrero, La. He actually switched from a commitment to South Florida. Lesson being, don’t get too attached to this one.
Brown is the third commitment from Louisiana, and all have given pledges this month. The other five are from Mississippi, so coach Dan Mullen is off to a good start with the in-state recruiting. According to Rivals.com, five of the eight commitments are three-star guys, including Brandon defensive end Nelson Adams.
The D-line is a point of emphasis for Mullen, and he has two so far in Adams and Brown. Plenty of big targets out there at that position, including Morton’s Quay Evans and Aberdeen’s Channing Ward, both defensive linemen and both members of the Rivals250 group.
If you missed it, I had an entry a few weeks ago looking at some of the athletes in the Rivals250 that MSU is targeting.
Q: Have you seen Renardo Sidney around anywhere? Was wondering if he has been taking his physical conditioning serious this offseason.
A: I’ve not seen Sid around, and I couldn’t catch up with strength coach Richard Akins. But Sidney has said he’ll get in shape, and he’ll certainly have no excuses if he isn’t. He’s got an entire offseason in which he knows what he’s preparing for, and he’s got a top-notch weightroom in the Mize Pavilion at his disposal. You would think (hope) that his teammates are pushing him extra hard, because he seems the type who needs it.
Q: Is Ryan Duffy doing any better?
A: Duffy, the former baseball player who broke his neck in a diving accident last summer, is still paralyzed below the neck. So he requires 24/7 care, but he is at home in Malabar, Fla. You can visit his website here, and his parents posted an update just today. I’m planning on doing an update on Duffy some time this summer.
Q: What is the likelihood of Devin Jones signing with the Orioles, or coming back to Starkville for another year? Also the likelihood of Nick Routt coming back if he gets offered after playing Cape Cod?
A: When we spoke with coach John Cohen the other day, he sounded resigned to Jones leaving. The junior pitcher was drafted by Baltimore in the ninth round.
“We had a great discussion (Tuesday),” Cohen said. “Devin really enjoys being part of our program at Mississippi State. It really depends on his personal financial situation. We’ll just wait and see how that unfolds.”
As for Routt, who came back pretty strong this year from elbow surgery but was not drafted, Cohen said, “I think there’s a possibility you could lose Routt, because he’s going to go pitch in the Cape, and I think people are just waiting to see how healthy he is.” I’m just not sure who’s willing to take a chance on him, and getting in a full, healthy season in 2012 could be beneficial.
