Bulldogs Get Boost with USM Win

Mississippi State got the boost it was looking for, and it wasn’t just a boost of confidence. Tuesday’s 5-4 comeback win over No. 18 Southern Miss in Pearl will help the Bulldogs (20-9) in the RPI department, as the Golden Eagles entered the game No. 2 in the country. MSU was 45th after being swept by Georgia but edged up to 41st with the win, according to BoydsWorld.com.

The hero Tuesday was sophomore left-hander Luis Pollorena, who tossed 5.2 innings of lockdown relief, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out six on 62 pitches. He entered the game after Andrew Busby and Kendall Gravemen got in trouble, giving up four runs through the first 1.2 innings, which put MSU down 4-2.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead with a two-run seventh inning, and you want to talk about scratching out runs: A walk, a single and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Cody Freeman was walked to bring in the tying run, and an RBI groundout by C.T. Bradford put State back on top.

Back on the mound, Caleb Reed got the final five outs for his fourth save of the season.

So MSU goes into this weekend’s series with No. 4 Florida feeling pretty good. We’ll get John Cohen‘s thoughts later this morning.
