It’s a beautiful Saturday out there, and a good day to take in some rather important MSU athletic events. At 10 a.m., the football team will hold an open scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium, the first practice this spring inside the facility. It’s the 11th practice overall and comes a week before the annual Maroon-White spring game.
Coach Dan Mullen liked what he saw in yesterday’s practice and hopes it carries over to this morning.
“I liked our energy and tempo today,” Mullen said. “I liked it last Saturday (during the team’s first scrimmage), too. But tomorrow needs to be better. When we go to the stadium, the intensity, physicality, all of it needs to jump another level.”
Then at 2 p.m., MSU’s baseball team takes on No. 10 Arkansas in Game 2 of their series. The Hogs won the first one last night, 8-3, but coach John Cohen was pleased with starting pitcher Caleb Reed, who gave up six earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 6.1 innings. Freshman Chris Stratton (3-3, 3.75 ERA) will start on the mound for MSU today opposite Brett Eibner (2-2, 4.05).
Also in action, on the road, is the track and field squad at the Ole Miss Invitational. Softball visits LSU for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
