Junior defensive tackle Fletcher Cox was a first-team selection to the Associated Press All-SEC team, which was released Monday afternoon.
Cox has recorded 49 tackles, 12.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks in 11 games this season, with the bulk of his big plays coming over the last half of the season. The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder also had three quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal. He’s the first MSU defensive tackle chosen to the AP first team since Ronald Fields in 2004.
Making the second team were tailback Vick Ballard, cornerback Johnthan Banks and offensive lineman Gabe Jackson, while offensive lineman Quentin Saulsberry earned honorable mention. Ballard has rushed for 1,009 yards and eight touchdowns this season. Banks has 64 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks, five interceptions and nine pass break-ups this season. He’s one of three second-team cornerbacks, the other two being Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick and Vanderbilt’s Casey Hayward.
(In case you’re wondering, Banks was initally omitted from the list, but the AP updated it this afternoon with Banks included. The first-eam corners were both LSU players, Tyrann Mathieu and Morris Claiborne.)
Jackson has started 25 consecutive games at left guard, while Saulsberry began the year at center but wound up at right guard due to a season-ending injury to Tobias Smith.
