Mississippi State signee D.J. Gardner, a 6-foot-7 guard from Okolona, has been selected to participate in the 2011 National High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships. The event will be held at the Berry Center in Houston on April 1 and be televised by CBS on April 3, the day before the NCAA title game (which will be played at Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans).
Gardner, who averaged 32.0 points per game and shot 40 percent from 3-point range his senior season, will be one of eight competitors (the field is not yet complete).
I got Gardner on the phone and asked if he’ll be able to practice given his foot injury. He said he would.
“I haven’t been feeling no pain on my foot. I’m still going to get it checked out, see what it is.”
Gardner is supposed to have surgery on the foot but hasn’t yet scheduled the procedure, which will involve shaving down bone spurs. He plans to enroll at MSU in the summer.
