Well, it might be just the NIT, but Mississippi State has a pretty cool first-round matchup with Jackson State. The game is set for 9 p.m. Tuesday in Starkville. Yes, 9 p.m., and it’ll air on ESPNU.
Since it’s one of the four No. 1 seeds in the 32-team field, MSU (23-11) will get home games in each of the first three rounds if it keeps winning. Then it’s off to New York City for the semifinals (March 30) and championship game (April 1). The MSU-JSU winner gets the winner of North Carolina and William & Mary. It’d be pretty cool to have Roy Williams and the defending NCAA champs come to town. Been a rough season for the Tar Heels, who were a top-10 team in the preseason.
The second round games are played Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Anyway, Jackson State (19-12) was the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament but lost to lowly Grambling State in the first round. I’ll gather more info on the Tigers tomorrow.
A little NIT history for you regarding MSU. The Bulldogs have made six previous appearances and sport a 6-6 all-time record. They reached the semifinals in NYC in 2007, where a last-second shot by West Virginia put them out.
