The USA Today coaches preseason poll came out this morning, and Mississippi State is in the receiving votes section. The Bulldogs got 21 votes, which would put them 33rd overall. They finished last season unranked after going 7-6.
Seven SEC teams made the top 25, with LSU voted No. 1 and reigning national champion Alabama No. 2 – the Crimson Tide beat the Tigers in the BCS title game. Also ranked: No. 6 Georgia, No. 9 South Carolina, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 23 Florida, No. 25 Auburn. Also receiving votes were Texas A&M (three spots ahead of MSU), Missouri and Tennessee.
MSU plays Auburn in the second game of the season, Sept. 8 in Starkville. That game kicks off at 11 a.m. on ESPN, and we learned today that it will be broadcast in 3D. Auburn opens its season the week before against No. 14 Clemson (in Atlanta), so it’s no guarantee the Tigers will be ranked coming into Starkville.
MSU hasn’t been ranked in the USA Today poll since Week 3 of last season, when it was 25th.
The Associated Press preseason rankings will come out Aug. 18.
