Mullen Likes Bulldogs’ Focus

Battle for the Golden Egg: No. 25 MSU (7-4, 3-4 SEC) at Ole Miss (4-7, 1-6), Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPNU (Clay Matvick and Herm Edwards)

We’re closing in on the big day, and so far, MSU coach Dan Mullen likes what he’s seen from his players as they try to shake off two straight losses and get ready for the Rebels.

“Rivalry week is the biggest week of the year,” Mullen said on this morning’s SEC coaches teleconference. “Our focus, coming off a tough loss last week, but having a rivalry game of this magnitude allows you to refocus very quickly, and I felt our guys have done a great job of refocusing so far this week."

It’s a different kind of week, but not just because of the Egg Bowl. Thanksgiving, of course, is tomorrow, which is going to shake up the practice schedule a little bit. Mullen said the team will practice early Thursday morning and try to be out of there by 11:30 a.m. so coaches and players can join their families for the rest of the holiday.

“We practice early Thursday morning, so it’s a little bit more of a stress on our coaching staff getting everything prepared,” Mullen said. “We’ll end up staying a little bit later tonight, come in extra early tomorrow.”

Mullen’s Thanksgiving plans: Hang out with his wife and kid and maybe catch a little football.

Mullen also spoke today about defending Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and tailback Brandon Bolden, about whom I’ll be writing for Friday’s Daily Journal. So look for that.
