On the Links: Monday Morning Roundup

I have deadlines every day, but there is a huge deadline looming Friday: That’s when all my copy for the 2011 Football Journal is due. You’ve seen our preseason magazine before, and so you know to expect wall-to-wall coverage of MSU and Ole Miss, plus junior colleges and state colleges.

The football tab, as we call it, will be in your Aug. 28 Daily Journal. And since I’ll be focusing on my stories for that special section, I might be a little less visible here and on Twitter this week.

Now, let’s take a look around and see what’s poppin’ this morning.

• Here’s a story on the SEC presidents and their Sunday meeting. The league will stay at 12 teams … for now. I’ve tried to reach MSU president Mark Keenum but have been unsuccessful.

• The Tupelo 49ers won last night to advance to the semifinals of the American Legion World Series. Why should you care? Because future Bulldog Brandon Woodruff is part of the team, and he had a big day: seven innings of shutout ball on the mound and a big second-inning double. Here’s a box score.

Also playing for Tupelo are incoming freshman Will Cox and Tanner Gaines, who was a freshman this past season. The 49ers take on Eden Prairie, Minn., at 6 p.m. today, and you can watch it on ESPN3.com.

• MSU’s basketball team is headed home from Paris after completing an unbeaten exhibition tour through Europe. The Bulldogs defeated five teams in three countries, and SID Gregg Ellis, a former Journalite, has a good recap of events. Notable, but not too surprising: He said freshman D.J. Gardner will likely be redshirted this season. The Parade All-American played through a foot injury last season at Okolona.

• I’m one of the 15 people who subscribes to the Sporting News mag, and its college football preview issue is out now. TSN has LSU as the No. 1 team in the country, which I don’t buy, but who knows. Six SEC teams are in the mag’s top 25, including MSU at No. 20.

State is projected to finish fifth in the Western Division behind Auburn (not sure I buy that, either), and the bowl projection is a matchup with Maryland in the Music City Bowl.
