On the Links: Prohm Update; Spring (Football) In the Air

Hey, I’ve got some links for you this fine morning. So read and enjoy.

• The big news yesterday was MSU reaching out, via a search firm, to Murray State coach Steve Prohm (CLICK HERE). The school’s athletics director confirmed this to local media, and he was none too happy about it because of the timing.

Prohm was contacted while the Racers were still participating in the NCAA tournament. The contact was made last week, quite possibly on Friday. Rick Stansbury announced his retirement on Thursday, the same day Murray State began NCAA play, and then Saturday was another game, which the Racers lost to Marquette. So Friday makes the most sense, unless MSU contacted him prior to Stansbury’s announcement.

And remember, CBSSports.com reported yesterday that Prohm was State’s “primary target for now.”

The Paducah Sun is among those reporting (behind a pay wall) about the firm contacting Prohm, although the paper spoke with Prohm on Tuesday morning, and he told them that no school had contacted him. And technically that’s true, since the firm was the one making contact.

“I love Murray,” Prohm told the Sun. “Murray’s a special, special place.”

Maybe so, but his base pay is $195,000, and even though Murray State is currently reworking his contract, MSU can easily pay Prohm more than he could ever make at Murray.

I’ve left messages with both Prohm and the AD, Allen Ward. I’ll certainly let y’all know if I hear back.

• On the football front, spring is in the air! Both MSU and Ole Miss start spring drills this week (CLICK HERE), with the Bulldogs kicking things off Thursday around 4:30 p.m. It’s open to the public.

Also in today’s Journal is a football notebook (CLICK HERE), which talks about Tyler Russell, injuries and the departure of receiver Michael Carr. We spoke with Dan Mullen for a good 40 minutes yesterday, so there’s plenty more material coming your way soon.
