Today’s game: at Auburn (1-0, 0-0 SEC), 6 p.m., Fox Sports Net (announcers: Bob Rathbun play-by-play, Dave Archer color, Jenn Hildreth sideline), ESPN360.com, XM Channel 201, Sirius Channel 217.
We’re on The Plains, at Jordan-Hare Stadium, ready for the SEC opener for both teams. And it’s the SEC debut for MSU’s Dan Mullen and Auburn’s Gene Chizik. Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News takes a look back at previous SEC coaching debuts. Interesting note from that story: Today is the first time since 2003 that new head coaches have made their SEC debuts against each other (Mike Shula beat Rich Brooks). Also, only three of MSU’s last 10 head coaches have won their SEC debut.
Now, for some pregame notes:
• There were rumors earlier this week that freshman WR Chad Bumphis was sick. I’ve confirmed that he was ill most of the week, but that he’s been fine since at least Friday and will start tonight. I wonder, though, if he’ll be at full strength. Team spokesman Joe Galbraith said everybody that was supposed to make the trip made it, and that no one is sick. You’ll recall that offensive guard Tobias Smith stayed home to receive more treatment for his ankle, and TE Brandon Henderson is out with an ankle injury.
• Senior tailback Anthony Dixon will see his first action tonight. No word on if he’ll start, though. No lineup changes for tonight.
• MSU has won three of its last six at Jordan-Hare.
