Taking Stock of MSU’s Recruiting Class

As we near the final weekend of official visits, the recruiting picture is starting to take shape. Sort of.

Heck, we all know that all sorts of wackiness could break out over the next six days. In fact, it wouldn’t be recruiting season if it didn’t. Nevertheless, let’s take stock of where Mississippi State stands right now.

Wednesday saw the Bulldogs miss out on one prospect and lose another. As to the former, three-star defensive end Devaunte Sigler chose Auburn over State, which wasn’t particularly surprising, because he hails from Mobile. MSU has been putting a big emphasis on the defensive line this year, so it can absorb that miss.

But can it absorb the loss of Lloyd Allen, a commit who changed directions and now plans to sign with Houston? According to ESPN, the three-star defensive end from Mississippi Gulf Coast CC is back with the school to which he originally committed (Rivals.com lists him as a Houston commit).

I have confirmation from Paul Jones of BulldawgJunction.com that MSU’s coaches pulled Allen’s offer once he didn’t graduate in December. So that makes room for someone else, perhaps defensive end Leon Mackey, another three-star end from the juco ranks (Hinds). It should be noted that the three-star rating comes from Scout.com; Rivals gives Mackey four stars.

Mackey will reportedly make his announcement on signing day, which is next Wednesday.

So, MSU currently has 24 commitments, counting the waffling Jermaine Whitehead, the cornerback from Amanda Elzy. MSU is also waiting to see which way South Panola WR Nickolas Brassell will ultimately go, because he’s been all over the map. Whitehead could decide as early as today.

Back to defensive linemen, tackle Kevin McReynolds, out of Washington, D.C., visited last weekend and is scheduled to announce on signing day.

If you’re into team rankings, MSU currently is 37th in the country according to Rivals (10th SEC) and 29th according to Scout (10th SEC), which still has Allen listed as an MSU commit. And even if Allen was cut loose by MSU, it’s still disconcerting to see so many players renege on their commitment this past month. Brassell, C.J. Johnson, Madison Central RB Joe Price – tough losses.

But hey, it’s recruiting season, and like a long night at the craps table, your luck can turn in an instant.
