8.8 Practice Report | Ole Miss Sports

Notes and observations from Hayden Sowers …

The second practice of the day for Ole Miss was very competitive with a lot of competition drills being utilized. Here are some excerpts from head coach Hugh Freeze after practice:
On the running game coming together: “Our running backs ran the ball very very well today especially Randall and Jeff.”

Specifically on Randall Mackey: “Yeah, I’ve said from Day 1 with Randall if he gets his act together off the field he fits into what we do he can be a very valuable part of it.”

From a personal observation from the practices I have watched Randall Mackey will be a huge part of this offense. He has the upfield burst you want your RB to have and showed that today taking a swing pass, cutting once upfield, and taking it to the house from 20 yards. Today he took snaps at RB and at the Wildcat QB position.

Freeze wasn’t asked about the QB position post-practice, but I thought both performed very well. Wallace showed some of the great throws that you want an SEC QB to make, but he also got lucky as safeties Trae Elston and Quintavious Burdette both dropped picks in the end zone.

Freeze was asking about the three way battle between Tanner Burns, Chief Brown, and Cody Prewitt for the starting strong safety position: “Well we need all three of them. We have not discussed a depth chart one time and I’m really not concerned about a depth chart right now.”

I agree with Freeze in that you will see all three of those guys get action early in the season until one man steps up.
