Update 3:02 p.m.
Live from Maw Maw B’s. Brad Locke reports that Tupelo High defensive tackle P.J. Jones has committed to Mississippi State. LINK
Ole Miss media relations announces that Keith Burns joins the football coaching staff as defensive backs coach. Burns comes from Kansas State where he’d coached the secondary for one season. He’s a former defensive coordinator at Southern Cal and also at Arkansas for Nutt’s first two seasons there.
Today marks the beginning of a big recruiting weekend at Ole Miss with close to 30 prospects expected to make official visits.
Many of them have already committed to Ole Miss, but there are some big names that have not, particularly on defnese – LB CJ Johnson, CB Jermaine Whitehead and Tupelo DT P.J. Jones, who was in contact yesterday with Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and MSU defensive coordinator Chris Wilson.
Early playing time is there to be had for many signees particularly at linebacker and in the secondary.
Ole Miss folks feel good about their recruitment of Johnson and Whitehead, though LSU has gotten in the mix late for Johnson.
Also scheduled to visit is South Panola WR Nick Brassell.
We’ll see if a few more commitments come from this big weekend.
I will be driving down to Baton Rouge this morning. It’s a 5 1-2 hour trip to Maw Maw B’s house, and I will check in again in the afternoon.
In search of its first SEC win, Ole Miss plays at LSU Saturday at 12:30.
