The MLB draft begins with the first round tonight, and the Rebels are expected to have three signees taken tonight.
Typically, signees drafted so highly don’t choose college, and that’s the expectation for the top recruits in the Rebels’ signing class.
One of them, Lake Charles, La., shortstop Gavin Cecchini, will be attending the draft live, not just watching it on TV.
The most notable Rebels’ underclassman expected to get an early call is Alex Yarbrough, but that won’t come in the first round. Yarbrough has been projected between rounds 4 and 10.
Kyle Alford is with me on this trip. He’s not a fan of sitting around the hotel time, and there’s been a lot of that, but he has been able to have some interesting conversations. He met juco signee Austin Blunt at the pool and jumped into a discussion with a handful of scouts at breakfast.
Kyle says the scouts had good things to say about Yarbrough but weren’t necessarily enamored with the Rebels’ junior second baseman. They were intrigued by freshman pitcher Hawtin Buchanan.
