As the Ole Miss coaching staff continues to remain under evaluation, according to head coach Houston Nutt, here are a couple of names, not official mind you, that could be added to the staff.
These are only names I’ve heard tossed about in various discussions. Nutt has not confirmed that there will be any change on his staff but is apparently giving thought to a number of different scenarios.
Mark Helfrich. Currently the offensive coordinator at Oregon, you ask, why would he leave there? Well, I heard it suggested that he might not have a great relationship with Oregon coach Chip Kelly. After speaking with someone close to the Oregon program, there seems to be no rift between Helfrich and Kelly. It stands to reason that Helfrich will be targeted for jobs, though, and since he doesn’t call the plays at Oregon he may be open for a new challenge.
Offensive coordinators don’t typically call the plays under Nutt either, but that could change if Nutt is looking to make a big hire, a splashy hire. Oregon leads the nation in scoring offense and total offense going into Monday’s BCS championship game against Auburn.
David Lee. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Miami Dolphins situation he could be available. Has strong ties with Nutt – having coached with him on two different stints at Arkansas – and is known for coaching quarterbacks. There will be plenty of quarterbacks needing coached in Oxford next year, two returning on scholarship, several walk-ons, a juco transfer, a walk-on transfer and possibly another transfer, Barry Brunetti. That doesn’t include incoming freshmen. Instability with the Dolphins could also make former Ole Miss OL coach George DeLeone available, by the way.
Joe Pannunzio. Coached tight ends and special teams at the University of Miami since 2006. Pannunzio coached with Tommy Tuberville at Ole Miss from 1995-1998 and was with Tuberville for one season at Auburn. He’s known as a very successful recruiter.
