When Ole Miss was scheduled to open the 2011 season at home against Boise State, the popular thought was the Rebels would be opening with a national championship contender. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall wants the public to know things haven’t changed on that front.
Brigham Young had its media day last week, and Mendenhall brought up the national championship discussion himself. BYU, which signed an eight-year deal with ESPN last September, has left the Mountain West Conference and is in its first season as an independent.
There will be new starters on defense but 10 starters return on offense.
The Cougars were only 7-6 last year but hit a stride in the second half of the season and won five of their last six.
