Nix pleased with practice; Mackey coy about possible start | Ole Miss Sports

Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix walked off the field on Wednesday pleased with his defense,“They were very enthusiastic, practicing with a purpose,. I feel like they have a passion and desire to try to go win another ballgame,” he said. Nix also had high praise for the Fresno State offense saying, “I see an outstanding QB, you know last year the guy that was starting was one of the best, but I think this guy is even better. He may be the best QB that we have seen thus far on film. They max protect a lot and throw the ball deep and give him a chance to make plays. He is pretty sharp.”

Nix also indicated that he wasn’t pleased with spur Aaron Garbutt’s play against Georgia and said that freshman Cody Prewitt had been moved to backup spur. Nix said of Prewitt, “Cody Prewitt, is going to have an outstanding career so don’t be surprised if you see him in the game as well.”

Nix also had high praise for another freshman, Sederius Bryant, who he said had passed up Keith Lewis at LB and was pleased with Bryant’s attitude and passion for the game. Nix mentioned other freshmen, Senquez Golson and CJ Johnson, as young players who will play a more prominent role in Saturday’s game.

Offensively, quarterback Randall Mackey, who looks to be taking most of the snaps with the first team this week, didn’t give any indication whether or not he was in fact starting on Saturday. When asked Mackey replied with, “Maybe.”

Mackey also said that the coaches had been working with him on going through his progressions more and staying in the pocket as opposed to tucking and running.
