ESPN is reporting there has been contact between the Tennessee administration and Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt about the Vols’ suddenly vacant football position.
In text correspondence a few minutes ago Nutt said neither he nor his agent, Jimmy Sexton, have been contacted by the Vols.
ESPN has also reported that the Vols were turned down today by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and that Nutt and former Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden have been contacted.
“That’s so wrong,” Nutt said, at least for his part of the equation. “I love what we have going on at Ole Miss.”
Nutt was contacted and in fact had discussions with Kansas about its vacancy in December.
Update 1:48 p.m.
Spoke with AD Pete Boone a few minutes ago. Boone is getting ready to leave tomorrow for his tour of Nike manufacturing plants in Southeast Asia. Says Boone:
“I’m leaving tomorrow, and we’ll meet this afternoon to catch up on everything. I think it’s just all rumors right now. I don’t anticipate him talking with them. I do think they’ll move pretty fast or will want to.”
Boone says the meeting is so Nutt will know how to reach him during his trip if something comes up.
Update 4:57 p.m.
No news to report. About to go into Stegeman Coliseum. Here’s a Sporting News link from earlier in the day that has UT talking to Fulmer. LINK
Here’s another ESPN link that has Gruden turning them down. LINK
Update 5:08 PM
Just talked with Pete Boone. He did meet with Nutt this afternoon as he expected he would. He said Nutt told him “there’s nothing going on with Tennessee.”
Update 5:44 p.m.
Though Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp reportedly had turned down Tennessee earlier, rumors are surfacing that indicate he is still a candidate for the job.
